Bloomberg L.P. is an American multinationalmass media corporation based in New York City, New York. Bloomberg makes up one third of the $16 billion global financial data market with estimated revenue of $6.25 billion in 2009. Bloomberg L.P. was founded by Michael Bloomberg with the help of Thomas Secunda, Duncan MacMillan, and Charles Zegar in 1981 and a 30% ownership investment by Merrill Lynch. The company provides financial software tools such as analytics and equity trading platform, data services and news to financial companies and organizations around the world through the Bloomberg Terminal (via its Bloomberg Professional Service), its core money-generating product. Many customers use only a small fraction of the machine's 30,146 functions. Bloomberg L.P. has grown to include a global news service, including television, radio, the Internet and printed publications.
Its current headquarters are located at the Bloomberg Tower, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The building is also known as One Beacon Court for the lighted rectangular beacon that caps the tower and the paved courtyard at the ground level.
Stewart started as a stand-up comedian, but branched into television as host of Short Attention Span Theater for Comedy Central. He went on to host his own show on MTV, called The Jon Stewart Show, and then hosted another show on MTV called You Wrote It, You Watch It. He has also had several film roles as an actor. Stewart became the host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central in early 1999. He is also a writer and co-executive-producer of the show. After Stewart joined, The Daily Show steadily gained popularity and critical acclaim, resulting in his sixteen Emmy Awards.
Stewart has gained acclaim as an acerbic, satirical critic of personality-driven media shows, in particular those of the US media networks such as CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. Critics say Stewart benefits from a double standard: he critiques other news shows from the safe, removed position of his "fake news" desk. Stewart agrees, saying that neither his show nor his channel purports to be anything other than satire and comedy. In spite of its self-professed entertainment mandate, The Daily Show has been nominated for news and journalism awards. Stewart hosted the 78th and 80th Academy Awards. He is the co-author of America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction, which was one of the best-selling books in the U.S. in 2004 and Earth (The Book): A Visitor's Guide to the Human Race released in 2010.
After graduating from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre in 1983, Sorkin spent much of the 1980s in New York as a struggling, sporadically employed actor. He found his passion in writing plays, and quickly established himself as a promising young playwright. His stage play A Few Good Men caught the attention of Hollywood producer David Brown, who bought the film rights before the play even premiered.

China Currency Devaluation Is Good News for Gold Demand - Bloomberg Intelligence
Kitco News -- The sentiment in China will continue to be bearish, with one market expert noting that ‘everything is falling off a cliff,’ in the country. Speaking to Kitco news on Friday, Ken Hoffman, sector head of global metal and mining for Bloomberg Intelligence said that, ‘China is in decrease mode [and] we actually think their copper demand, for the first time in 30 years, will actually decline by 2-4%.’ He explained that as the country shifts from an industrial-based economy to a more information technology-based one, old businesses -- steel, copper, cement -- are going to be hurt. Hoffman also commented on the recent surprise move by the Chinese central bank to devalue its currency, the yuan. ‘One of the biggest points that China has right now is to make the yuan more global,’ he noted, adding that the weakening of the yuan is helping gold. ‘If China is going to devalue its currency, that’s going to be very positive for gold demand in China, the world’s largest gold buyer,’ he explained. Speaking on the recent release of gold reserve holdings by the People’s Bank of China, Hoffman said that, ‘even people in the country don’t believe the numbers that were released.’ ‘There is a way central banks can sort of hide gold [holdings],’ he remarked. However, he noted that gold continues to play a very important role in the country’s currency strategy. China still has a 'strong and sincere interest in gold,’ he added. On Friday, gold prices continued their winning streak, hitting a six-week high. December Comex gold was last up $5.10 at $1,158.30 an ounce.

Chinese Gold Standard Would be "Game Changer” - Bloomberg Intelligence | Kitco News
Could gold, the world's longest running currency be used to create a new order in global currencies? The Chinese central bank is said to be considering backing its yuan with the yellow metal. This move, says Ken Hoffman, Global Head of Metals and Mining Research for Bloomberg Intelligence, would be a "game changer." Why would China consider such a move? Hoffman explains that Chinese policy makers are already trying to establish the yuan as a reserve currency, and backing it with gold would help attract foreign capital inflows. China is expected to receive approval from its central bank for a yuan-denominated gold fix, with a potential for an announcement as early as next week. Hoffman explains that a gold standard would not necessarily create a big constraint to the Chinese central bank, as many believe. “It could be at any price they fix. There’s a lot of things that they can do to make this work,” he says. Hoffman estimates that to create an exchange rate of one ounce of gold for every $64,000, the country would need about 10,000 metric tons of the metal. "That’s nine times the nation’s official holdings and about 6 percent of all the bullion ever mined globally," Hoffman says. Moving to a gold standard may also be a question of power for China. Hoffman says that when the U.S. adopted a gold standard after World War II, it emerged as the main power in the International Monetary Fund. In 1971, the U.S. ended the use of the gold standard and rendered the dollar a fiat currency. If China decides to go into some form of a gold standard, Hoffman says it would make the rest of the world view the metal as a currency again. “If they go for it, we’d be talking about fireworks,” he says. The daily hiccups of the global financial markets are more meaningful when viewed against the backdrop of world financial events and a longer timeline. This webinar on understanding what makes the markets move features Richard Miller of Bloomberg News and Mike McNamee of the Investment Company Institute.
They discussed the impact of foreign markets on U.S. trading, as well as the “real economy” – indicators such as jobs, consumer spending and auto sales. Federal Reserve policy – or expected policy – can move the markets, as can the price of oil and the seemingly remote troubles of tiny Greece.
For journalists, our experts offered tips on explaining how economic stories may affect a specific audience:
* Know what drives the local economy: Is it manufacturing, tourism, agriculture?
* Talk with a regional economist; many are affiliated with local universities.
* Banks may also have economists who are tracking local trends.
* Identify economists working with local companies. Try the National Association of Business Economists.
* Financial planners can help local investors understand what’s happening.
Links below will take you to important websites for current economic information as well as helpful FAQs.
A key takeaway: Don’t be overwhelmed by the markets’ ups and downs. Try to read broader signals to keep a saner perspective, for yourself and for your audience.

Bloomberg on How to Start a Business and Make Money: Financial Industry (1998)
Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born February 14, 1942) is an American business magnate, politician and philanthropist. He served as the 108th Mayor of New York City, holding office for three consecutive terms beginning with his first election in 2001. With a net worth of $34 billion, he is the eleventh-richest person in the United States and the sixteenth-wealthiest in the world.
He is the founder and 88% owner of Bloomberg L.P., the global financial data and media company notable for its Bloomberg Terminal.
Bloomberg began his career at the securities brokerage Salomon Brothers before forming his company in 1981 and spending the next twenty years as its chairman and CEO. He also served as chairman of the board of trustees at his alma mater Johns Hopkins University from 1996 to 2002. A Democrat before seeking elective office, Bloomberg switched his party registration in 2001 to run for mayor as a Republican. He defeated opponent Mark Green in a close election held just weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Bloomberg won a second term in 2005 and left the Republican Party two years later. He campaigned to weaken the city's term limits law and was elected to his third term in 2009 as an independent candidate on the Republican ballot line.
He was frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for the U.S. presidential elections in 2008 and 2012, and for New York Governor in 2010. He declined to seek either office, instead opting to continue serving as Mayor of New York. On January 1, 2014, Bill de Blasio succeeded Bloomberg as mayor of New York City.
On January 31, 2014, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that he had appointed Mr. Bloomberg as his Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, assisting him in consultations with mayors and related key stakeholders to raise political will and mobilize action among cities as part of a long-term strategy to advance efforts on climate change.

Bloomberg L.P. is a privately held financial software, data and media company headquartered in New York City. Bloomberg L.P. was founded by Michael Bloomberg in 1981 with the help of Thomas Secunda, Duncan MacMillan, Charles Zegar[6] and a 30% ownership investment by Merrill Lynch.[7] Bloomberg L.P. provides financial software tools such as an analytics and equity trading platform, data services and news to financial companies and organizations through the Bloomberg terminal (via its Bloomberg Professional Service), its core money-generating product.[8] Bloomberg L.P. also includes a wire service (Bloomberg News), a global television network (Bloomberg Television), a radio station (WBBR), websites, subscription-only newsletters and three magazines: Bloomberg Businessweek, Bloomberg Markets and "Bloomberg Pursuit".
In 1981, Salomon Brothers was acquired, and Michael Bloomberg, a general partner, was given a $10 million partnership settlement.[10] Bloomberg, having designed in-house computerized financial systems for Salomon, used his $10 million severance check to start Innovative Market Systems (IMS).[11] Bloomberg developed and built his own computerized system to provide real-time market data, financial calculations and other financial analytics to Wall Street firms. In 1983, Merrill Lynch invested $30 million in IMS to help finance the development of "the Bloomberg" terminal computer system and by 1984, IMS was selling machines to all of Merrill Lynch's clients.
